Who are we ?
SYNATOM (the “Société Belge des Combustibles Nucléaire” (Belgian Nuclear Fuels Company)) is a Belgian company that is active throughout the nuclear fuel cycle. Its activities and responsibilities are divided into two parts, one technical (front-end and back-end of the cycle) and the other financial, mainly as a provisioning company responsible for the creation and management of nuclear provisions. Technical activities
SYNATOM ensures that the Belgian nuclear reactors are supplied with the enriched uranium they need to manufacture their fuel assemblies. After their use in the reactors, SYNATOM is then responsible for the intermediate storage of the spent fuel assemblies before they are finally transferred to ONDRAF. Learn more
Financial activities
SYNATOM is legally responsible for creating and managing the nuclear provisions. These financial provisions have to cover all long-term costs linked to the dismantling of the nuclear power plants as well as spent fuel management.

At the end of 2020, SYNATOM set up a department dedicated to investment management. In 2021, SYNATOM began a far-reaching overhaul of its rules of governance, notably with the creation of an Investment Committee chaired by an independent director and composed of experts, all of whom are SYNATOM directors.
The investment target has been adjusted based on the Phoenix agreements. Learn more
